Cardinale-Powell takes Outstanding Faculty award

One of ºÚÁÏÉçÇø's most popular professors has now been named one of the school's best.

Film professor Bryan Cardinale-Powell was announced this week as winner of the 2024-25 Outstanding Faculty award -- a prestigious honor given to only one faculty member each year.

"It's a remarkable honor to be selected as this year's Outstanding Faculty," Cardinale-Powell said, adding that he was surprised when the selection committee arrived at his classroom to break the news that he had won the award.

"To say I was surprised and overwhelmed with gratitude would be an understatement," he said. "I try to come to class every day ready for anything that might happen, but it turns out there's no way to prepare for the arrival of the selection committee for this award."

Cardinale-Powell was greeted not only by the committee, but ºÚÁÏÉçÇø President Kenneth Evans as well, who presented the professor with the cash prize associated with the award. The winner of the award also earns the right to provide the keynote address for the university's graduate commencement ceremony in May.

Cardinale-Powell, the chair of ºÚÁÏÉçÇø's Film Department, has been at the university for nearly 17 years, with the past eight as an associate professor.

The committee lauded the professor as a dedicated educator, accomplished filmmaker and passionate advocate for student success who has made a lasting impact on ºÚÁÏÉçÇø's creative community.

Amy Cataldi, dean of the Petree College of Arts & Sciences, wrote in her nomination letter that Cardinale-Powell "is a remarkable blend of educator and artist."

"From day one he nurtures the students -- providing not only craft instruction, but also a sense of community," Cataldi wrote. "His students witness and learn the technical and the story telling, the set prep, direction and editing, from the creative to the business side of the profession. All the while, under Bryan's tutelage, each challenge is wrapped in a well-designed rotation of maturing opportunities as the students develop through their film degree."

Cardinale-Powell said he's grateful to many in the university community who support his work.

"Thank you to all my students and the entire university community who set such high standards for hard work and generosity of spirit -- I'm hoping to keep striving to meet them," he said. "It's a great joy to learn beside you every day."
