Dr. Sergio Monteiro - Professor of Music, Dir. of Piano

Steinway Artist and Director of Piano Activities at the Wanda Bass School of Music at 黑料社区, Sergio Monteiro was born in Niteroi, Brazil. He began piano study at the age of 4 with his mother and went on to work under the guidance of Myrian Dauelsberg at the National Music School of Rio de Janeiro, where he completed the bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees. During this period, he won several Brazilian and other South American piano competitions.

In 2000 he was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture to study at the Eastman School of Music in the U.S., where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts under Nelita True. He won important prizes at Eastman, including the Performance Certificate and the Concerto Competition. In 2003, Sergio won the 2nd Annual Martha Argerich International Piano Competition in Buenos Aires. He was invited to play at the opening concert of the Martha Argerich Festival with the Buenos Ayres Philharmonic conducted by Charles Dutoit, thus launching Sergio鈥檚 international career. Then he was selected to take part in the International Piano Academy at Como, Italy, where he worked with pianists and teachers such as Bashkirov, Andreas Staier, Fou T鈥檚ong, Claude Frank and Willian Grant Nabore. Sergio has appeared with several orchestras in South America, Europe and North America, under the direction of Charles Dutoit, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Pedro Ignacio Calderon, Isaac Karabitchevsky, Richard Rosenberg, Joel Levine, Eduard Schmieder, Misha Raschlevsky, Ira Levin, Anton Nanut, Grahan Jackson, Gabor Hollerung, Alexander Mickelthwate, Carmon DeLeone and others.

Among his artistic engagements, he has played with the Dresdner Philharmonic, at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the Oklahoma City Philharmonic at the Music Civic Center, Okla.; and the Symphony Toronto at the Toronto Center for the Arts, Canada. He also gave the Brazilian premiere of John Corigliano鈥檚 Piano Concerto with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; gave the premiere of Almeida Prado鈥檚 Gravuras Sonoras a D. Joao VI - for piano and orchestra; performed at the Kremlin in Moscow with the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra; and gave recitals at the Palestrina Hall in Rome, at the Konzerthaus and the Philharmonie in Berlin, at the Mozarteum Argentino, in Buenos Ayres, at the Sibelius Academy, in Helsinki, at the Millennium Stage, Kennedy Center, Washington, at the Reial Cercle Artistic, Barcelona, at the Steinway Halls in New York and Dallas, and at the Martha Argerich鈥檚 Festival, in Beppu, Japan.

In addition to recitals in Switzerland, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Italy, Netherlands and Germany, he has been invited frequently in the last years to perform, lecture and adjudicate in conservatories and concert halls in China, most notably Tianjin, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Guanxi and Qingdao. An energetic champion of Brazilian music, Sergio has been honored by many composers with invitations to premier compositions written for and dedicated to him. In 2008, a well-acclaimed recording featuring Villa-Lobos鈥 complete cycle of Prole do Beb锚 was released.

Since 2015, he has launched five recordings with Naxos featuring music of Henrique Oswald, Franz Liszt, Mendelssohn and Domenico Scarlatti, all receiving excellent reviews. These recordings have reached more than 10 million streams on Spotify. His Scarlatti albums have been considered the outstanding releases in the Naxos cycle of his Sonatas and the recording of Mendelssohn early piano music a 鈥渢rue ear-opener, showing how stunning composer Mendelssohn was at such an early age.鈥 The first volume of the complete piano works of French composer Louis Vierne has been released in the fall of 2021 and has been praised as 鈥渁n immense discovery.鈥 The second volume was scheduled to be launched in the fall of 2022.

In addition to his performing activities, Dr. Monteiro has a vibrant teaching career at 黑料社区 and his students have been winning competitions nationwide and establishing themselves as performers and teachers. He was elected Musician of the Year in 2011 by the Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs and received a Commendation from the Governor of the State of Oklahoma.

Sergio Monteiro celebrated Beethoven鈥檚 250th anniversary year in 2021, performing the complete cycle of his 32 sonatas in 8 recitals at the Wanda Bass School of Music, 黑料社区. It was the first time in 60 years that all Sonatas have been performed in Oklahoma City by a single artist.

 

Jennifer Mihee Song, founder of Song Piano Studio, has recently been honored as a Steinway & Sons Hall of Fame Teacher, a prestigious recognition awarded to a select group of distinguished educators. Originally from South Korea, Ms. Song has performed a solo recital at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Artist International Winner Series and has had an illustrious career with victories in the Bradshaw and Buono International, Suri, Nanpa, and Eumyeon competitions. She has showcased her talent in Japan, South Korea, and the United States and has performed extensively with her sisters as part of 鈥楾he Song Trio.鈥

Ms. Song holds a Professional Studies certificate and a Master鈥檚 degree from Manhattan School of Music, where she was a scholarship student. She also graduated with highest honors from Korea National University of Arts and Kyungwon University. Her former teachers include Marc Silverman, Soojung Shin, and Daejin Kim. She has participated in master classes with many renowned pedagogues, such as Maestro Joaquin Achuccaro, Erik Tawaststjerna, Robert Roux, T谩mas Ung谩r, Yeheved Kaplinsky, Jean-Paul Sevilla, Mikhail Woskressensky, Yong Hi Moon, and Dae Wook Lee.

As a co-founder and instructor of the 黑料社区 Piano Camp alongside Dr. Sergio Monteiro, which began in 2019, Ms. Song continues to contribute significantly to piano education. Her students have achieved success in numerous prestigious competitions, including the American Prot茅g茅 International Piano Competition, Piano League International Competition, The Kuleshov International Competition, Steinway & Sons Competition, the National Division of the MTNA, as well as the Meinders, Guilliam, Hubbard-Males, and Breckenridge competitions. She has been recognized for her exceptional teaching with the Steinway Top Teacher Award and the Piano League Excellence of Teaching Award.

 

Dr. Shaohong Yuan is currently the Viola Instructor at 黑料社区. She also is a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra. Performed with local chamber music organizations, such as the Oklahoma City Bright Music Chamber Orchestra and the Oklahoma Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. In the spring of 2019, Dr. Yuan was the Adjunct Professor of Viola at the University of Oklahoma. She also teaches at the Oklahoma Conservatory of Music since 2017.

In the summer of 2018, Dr. Yuan was invited to give lecture recitals on her doctoral research and performance analysis document at Renmin University of China and Beijing Normal University. In early 2019, an open master class was offered at the invitation of the Beijing Normal University Strings Association. In March 2019, an academic lecture on traditional Chinese music was held at the invitation of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics of the University of Oklahoma.

During her career in the United States, Dr. Yuan served as the violist of the University of Oklahoma Crouse String Quartet, the Principal Violist of the University of Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra, the Principal Violist of the Collegium Musicum Early Music Orchestra, and the Principal Violist of the University of Oklahoma Opera Orchestra. She also has traveled for touring performances of the University of Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra and the Crouse String Quartet. Notably, in the summer of 2016, as a representative of the School of Music, she visited Arezzo, Italy with the Crouse String Quartet.

During her studies in China, she participated in performances of the Central Opera Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the Chinese Opera Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the Chinese Film Orchestra and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra in Beijing Bird's Nest, the National Grand Theatre, the Beijing Concert Hall and the National Assembly Hall. Both doctoral and master degrees were earned at the University of Oklahoma with a full scholarship from Dr. Mark Neumann. She graduated from Renmin University of China and was a student of Professor Wang Changhai during her time in Beijing.

 

Emily Stoops began her cello studies at the age of 4 in her hometown of Davenport, Iowa. A passionate and respected teacher, she is also known as an experienced orchestral, chamber and studio musician. She has been a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic since 2006 and is a principal performer with the Tactus Chamber Ensemble of OKC. Prior to moving to OK, she was an active performer based in the greater Detroit area. There she taught a large cello studio, directed a chamber music outreach program in the community, worked regularly as a studio musician, and played with numerous professional orchestras and chamber groups.

Ms. Stoops holds a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in performance from the University of Iowa where she studied with Charles Wendt, and a Master鈥檚 Degree in performance from the University of Michigan with Anthony Elliott. Additional summer studies were at the Banff School for the Arts in Canada with Aldo Parisot and Shauna Rolston, and the Encore School near Cleveland, Ohio with Richard Aaron. During this time, Ms. Stoops was a member of the Quad City Symphony and played with the Center for New Music (University of Iowa) and Brave New Works (Ann Arbor, MI) where she premiered many works.

As a teacher, Ms. Stoops has spent years pursuing extensive training in cello pedagogy. She has studied both traditional and Suzuki cello pedagogy in-depth and is certified in all ten Suzuki cello books. Her pedagogy mentors have been primarily Tanya Lesinsky Carey, Richard Mooney, and Robert Culver. Ms. Stoops teaches at the Norman School for Strings, where she has maintained a thriving precollege studio for over fifteen years. Her students have attended universities and conservatories as music majors, have sat in principal positions at All-State and in youth orchestras, and have won local and regional solo and chamber music competitions.

Prior to joining the 黑料社区 string faculty, Ms. Stoops served as Artist in Residence at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, taught as visiting instructor of cello at both Oklahoma State University and at the University of Oklahoma, and just completed her 25th year of teaching at the Great Midwestern String Clinic in Davenport, Iowa. She has served as a guest clinician and sectional coach for countless schools and organizations over the years and has also taught at the OKC Cello Project, the University of Iowa All State summer camp and the Blue Lake Fine Arts camp in Michigan. She conducts a precollege summer cello camp in Norman, OK, where she resides with her husband Anthony, a bassist, and their two children, also string players.
